Curious Baby_2635.jpg
This shot of a very young Humpback Whale calf (Megaptera novaeangliae) was taken in Silver Bank Sanctuary. The Silver Bank is located 100 km north of the Dominican Republic and about the same distance from the Turks & Caicos Islands and is a major breeding and calving zone of humpback whales. Research indicates that the Silver Bank contains the largest population of humpbacks in the North Atlantic Ocean. This young calf which was about a month old was learning how to undertake 3-5min breathing cycles whilst the mom waits below. This image was predictably taken on the last day of our week at sea and no scuba equipment or strobes. I spent four hours in the water waiting for the whale mom (who never allows the calf to distance itself much) to feel comfortable with our presence. It was shot after a short freedive when this curious calf came within an arm´s distance of to take a good look and I actually had to move out of the way!
