This shot was taken whilst following a group of competitive Humpback Whale males before combat. The species is Megaptera novaeangliae. It was taken in Silver bank Sancutuary in the Atlantic Ocean of the Dominican Republic. This is in a reserve that sits about halfway between Turks and Caicos & the Dominican Republic.Humpback whales come here to mate and give birth annually. This group of competitive males called a ´Rowdy Group´ started to pick up speed before some fierce combat. There were about four of them and the fights were fierce We even spotted blood marks on the fins. We were moving at high speed and I wanted the images to be sharp, so worked with a high ISO and fast shutter speed. At times when they disappeared under the zodiac it felt like we would tip overWe stayed with the group for about 4 hours where I was on my knees and shot from the water level where one could really feel their intensity. It was breath-takingIn this shot one of the males dives under the boat and his huge caudal sliced the glassy water like a blade.
