This image was shot near the Island of Faial in the Acores Islands in the Portuguese Atlantic Ocean. It is a very large female sperm whale with her young calf. (Species - Physeter macrocephalus) This marine mammal has the largest brain of any animal which probably explains why getting close is such a huge challenge. To get in the water with these whales I went through the long process of obtaining a permit from the local Ministry of the Environment and no scuba equipment or strobes/flash are allowed which makes the encounter so pure. In the Azores whales are spotted using a Hydrophone through listening to the communication clicks underwater. On this dive we waited for several 45 minute dive cycles to end but when they surfaced something scared the whales we saw (probably the noise of motors on some of the whale watching vessels) and they quicly dove and disappeared. After 7 hours waiting patiently for an opportunity, we decided to head back to shore when this pair surfaced at a distance and I got into the water just ahead of its path before they zoomed across. This rare sight made the day!
